Abstract
Title:
Earth Sheltered Homes vs. Conventional Homes
Purpose:
Are earth sheltered homes better than conventional homes when it comes to energy efficiency, overall cost, safety and convenience?
Procedures:
I did my research with books from the library and checked out about 10 websites. I did lots of reading! I typed up a definition for an earth sheltered home and wrote about the different designs. I wrote a paragraph about the unique history of earth sheltered homes. I made charts comparing the basic advantages and disadvantages of the two types of homes. I wrote summaries on the energy use and costs of both types too. I drew a picture, which shows the thermal advantages of an earth sheltered home. I got a copy of a map, which shows the ground temperatures in North America. I printed some photos of different kinds of earth sheltered designs. Lastly, I looked at lots of different styles and then made a detailed model and labelled diagram of an earth sheltered home so you can see how unique it is.
Results:
An earth sheltered home costs more when first built, but makes up for it with energy savings because of the earth's thermal mass. The earth absorbs and holds heat and keeps it in. Changes in the earth's temperature occur very slowly. When it is hot out, the earth is still cooler. When it is cold out, the earth is still warmer. It is estimated that an earth sheltered home costs 10% more to build with the extra construction costs, but the energy savings could be from 50 to 80%. The extra building costs would be paid back quickly. Earth sheltered homes are very sturdy and are more immune to the violent elements of nature such as wind, tornadoes, fire, and earthquakes. They are quieter and more private. They are environmentally friendly and easier to maintain. They come in all kinds of neat designs. Earth sheltered homes can be just as comfortable and convenient as a conventional home!
Conclusions:
The benefits of earth sheltered homes are overwhelming. I don't know why more people don't have them. People think that earth sheltered homes have to be totally buried in the ground. They think that they are claustrophobic and damp and dark and cold. Those are all just myths. I would build an earth sheltered home if I had the chance! I think it would be the best choice for the environment.
