Safety Check List

All projects entered in the Peterborough Regional Science Fair must conform with the safety rules below.

1. The exhibit conforms to the rules on the maximum size: no more than 3.5 m high, 1.2 m side to side or 0.8 m front to back.    
2 The exhibit is self-standing and stable.    
3. The Backboard is unlikely to ignite and is not constructed entirely of bristol board and other paper products. Recommended backboards include ¼ inch thick wood products and/or synthetic materials designed for display purposes.    
4.  Any hazardous moving parts are protected.    
5.  No pressurized containers are being displayed.    
6.  No open flame is being used.    
7.  Any flammable or poisonous chemicals (solid, liquid, gas) is simulated.    
8.  Any radio-isotopes present are sealed and at normal background activity.    
9.  Any electrical power cord is CSA approved and provides necessary grounding.    
10.  Any electrical connection has been insulated.    
11.  Any non-current carrying metal parts are connected to the ground lead.    
12.  Any exposed live parts are at a potential of less than 36 V to the ground. Current is low so as not to pose any problems.    
13.  No voltages above 10 kV are being generated.    
14.  Lasers are not being operated during public display.    
15.  X-ray or other high energy radiation sources, if used, have been registered and approved by provincial authorities.    
16.  Live animals are not being displayed.    
17. If live animals were used, active procedures which could harm or distress the animals were not used.    
18. If microbiological organisms were used, no biological toxins are present.    
19. If microbiological organisms were used, there have been no experimental manipulations with recombinant DNA or animal viruses
